David N. Mitchell leads the International Drama Ministry of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. David N. Mitchell is a native of Chicago, Illinois and began an extensive 27 year career in drama and the arts at an early age at the Greater St. John AME Church on the Southside of Chicago. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theatre and Business from Grambling State University where he won numerous national awards for acting, directing and technical theatre. Most notably, David was a three time recipient of the coveted Irene S. Ryan Best Actor Award of the American College Theatre Festival and the National Association for Dramatic and Speech Arts for two years.
He founded the theatre program at St. Augustine’s College of Raleigh, North Carolina and produced a number of award winning theatrical productions. This was accomplished through public and private grants, corporate contributions, and box office revenue through performances and tours that he generated. He directed several theatre performances at the Raleigh Ensemble Players, Raleigh Little Theatre, and the Triangle Dinner Theatre. While in Raleigh, David served on the Trustee Board and directed the Male Chorus at St. Paul AME and presented a number of professional quality theatrical productions and incorporated several drama presentations as a part of the worship service. His biblically based drama performances were also presented during the Western North Carolina Annual Conference. They were well received and reinforced the “word” in an extremely creative and effective way. David also obtained resources through state arts grants for St. Paul AME in Raleigh to facilitate several arts programs that impacted the church family, the community and glorified God through the arts.
He served as Outreach Coordinator for the North Carolina Arts Council in the Department of Cultural Resources and was responsible for changing the cultural landscape of the state through several federally funded programs such as the Organization of Color Development Program and the Rural Arts Initiative, both funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.
David was also an Adjunct Professor of Theatre at the College of Charleston in South Carolina. While serving as a faithful member of Macedonia AME Church in Charleston, SC, David always involved the entire YPD of the 7th District South Carolina Conference in his youth productions presented by the City of Charleston Housing Authority. He provided free tickets to every YPD member of all the AME churches within the conference.
He is presently the Producer/Director of the Unity Production Group, L.L.C. and an active member of New Bethel A.M.E. Church in Lithonia, Georgia where he serves as the Pro Tem of the Steward Board, member of the Sons of Allen, the choirs, and director of several liturgical theatre productions.
